Sound House Student Spotlight: Niamh Kierans

Listen to “Placeholder” by Niamh Kierans, produced here at Sound House with instrumentals by Maddi Mae and drums by Deuce Stith.

Our boy Caleb of local band StriVe came into the studio with a heavy heart one night, ready to write a song honoring his friend. He didn’t get to say goodbye. I asked him, “If you could’ve said goodbye, what would you have said?” His response: “If I could get one thing through, I’d probably just tell you I love you.” I believe that songs can reverberate beyond our understanding. I believe that a song can be a goodbye. I loved seeing your happy faces at the holiday singalong tonight! Thank you so much for being a part of our little music community. 💚❤️ Visit StriveVA.bandcamp.com to listen to “Skull and Bones” now. At midnight, you can stream it on all platforms. On Saturday, we went to see Sound House friend Niamh Kierans perform with UVA’s University Singers and the Charlottesville Symphony at their annual holiday concert. Traces of snow, foggy festive glow, cozy Cabell Hall, cheerful buzz about. Of course, Damian threw snowballs at light posts. “I have to count it?!” 👁️👄👁️ Sixth grade singer Maddie has been working on accompanying herself with the guitar. I love the sweetness of her vocals during the first verses of “All-American” (clean version) by Olivia Rodrigo. Right now, we’re focusing on lining up lyrics with chord changes. Later on, we’ll level up to steady quarter note strums. Keeping the beat while tracking lyrics and chord changes can be tough. Sometimes singing and playing simultaneously feels a lot like juggling.
