Anyone else know this song, this album, this band?! Shoutout to Robert, the guy who worked at the grocery store with me 15 years ago and showed me this record. And extra special shoutout to Ashley for suggesting this bop for the setlist and then doing the Phil Collins thing so that we can duet together. Melody and I have been cooking up some new original material here at Sound House. Electro-pop / indie rock EP coming soon? In the meanwhile, check out her four 2025 singles. We had a lot of fun at our girls’ hangout back in February! First we practiced handshakes, introductions, and continuing a conversation with curiosity. Then everybody gave a one-song performance for the group, and they got a chance to practice giving each other positive feedback after each song. We finished up by jumping around, singing and dancing to loud music. Of course, our grand finale was the “Bohemian Rhapsody” singalong - a ritual at this point, thanks to my students’ enthusiasm for the absurd. I like these kids a lot. Thanks for sharing them with me! 💃 Somewhere in the space-time continuum, 13 year old Maddi is stoked that 33 year old Maddi is coaching a band of kick-butt 13 year olds as they play “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne. This is a new song in the Opal Duvall set list (yes, that’s their band name - how freaking cool!!!) so they’re still cleaning it, but I couldn’t resist posting a clip. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Rosalie is killing it. Lead guitarist Addison is killing it. And out of frame, drummer Brooklynn is killing it. Just wait until you hear the band’s full set! It’s so good! And all songs by girls! Reminder to practice with a metronome. Test yourself against the click to find and polish weak spots, improve accuracy, and gradually increase your speed. My new student Wade gifted me a special drawing yesterday! I love the accuracy: the guitars have six strings (“Eddie Ate Dynamite, GoodBye Eddie!”) and we’re both smiling while we play guitar together. I started taking lessons when I was five, so teaching a young student like Wade really does warm my heart and put a smile on my face. I remember how much I loved my teacher Eric and how much peace I felt while focusing on my instrument with his guidance.
