Enroll now for The Nitty Gritty of Songwriting Workshop with Maddi Mae. In this seven-week class, learn a detailed and methodical songwriting process to craft your best lyrics and music. This session starts on February 2, 2021 and ends on March 16. Participants meet every Tuesday at 7:00 PM for the duration of the workshop.

I feel like this class helped me round out my songwriting capabilities by connecting a lot of the steps I was already taking. It ultimately helped me write one of the best songs of my career. My favorite thing I learned is taking a free-writing / journal entry and finding song lyrics and stanzas within it.

Course Overview

WHO: This class is open to novice, amateur, intermediate, and advanced musicians.

WHAT: Learn a detailed and methodical process for writing your best lyrics and music.

WHEN: Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM, February 2 – March 16, 2021

RATES: $40 per week / $280 for the full workshop


Week 1

Songwriting goals, keeping track of the process, content journaling, scales (chromatic, major, and minor), making space for the work.

Week 2

Identifying themes, organizing journal content into song parts, crafting and then combining rhyming stanzas into song structures, scale degrees and their associated chords, the circle of fifths, effective practice and writing sessions.

Week 3

Self-editing lyrics, defining the time signature(s) by grouping beats to support the meter, the relationship between the mood of the lyrics and the mood of the music, chord types and their mood associations, chord formulas and charts.

Week 4

Peer-reviewing lyrics, common chord progressions, applying progressions to song parts, creating atmosphere and style by manipulating space, dynamics, rhythm, and technique, reviewing scales in preparation for melody work.

Week 5

Balancing songwriting and production, finding your vocal range, choosing a key, building melodies using scales, the relationship between chaos and creative breakthroughs.

Week 6

Learning from input to improve output, analyzing an iconic song to review concepts from class, performance skills, making a performance video, speedwriting challenge.

Week 7

Sharing songs and giving feedback.
